Spot rates from China to the Mediterranean climbed for a fifth straight week to reach US$1,092 per TEU last week, according to the latest data from the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI). China-Europe rates were also up last week, but marginally, by 0.8 per cent to $839 per TEU. But hopes for rate hikes on the China-US west coast trade have suffered a setback with spot rates falling last week by US$17 per FEU to $1,769 per FEU. The China-US east coast trade fared a little better as rates rose by a marginal 0.5 per cent to $3,343 per FEU. The week-to-week rise of 4.1 per cent made it the biggest mover of all the major trades covered by the index, and follows a 2.9 per cent increase the week before and a 5.5 per cent increase the week before that. Since July 22, when rates began trending up on the trade, China-Med spot rates have risen by a total of $174 or 18.9 per cent in just five weeks. Source: transportweekly
